I’m sure you’ve heard that old saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. I know they don’t mean it literally but for this entry let’s say they do. Every time I go to the bookstore I stroll in the new arrivals section and can’t wait to see the new cover designs. If you’ve never tired designing a book cover, do it for fun or on an online competition. It’s pretty difficult to design one and putting yourself in the driver’s seat of designing one will make you quickly realize that.  I came across and essay by Steven Heller of The New York Times talking about the relationship between the writer and the designer they decided to use over and over again. I got really excited when I saw this because I have been reading a Chuck Palahniuk book, Choke, and it’s great to read about the designer and how he feels about working with Palahniuk.

To read the essay go to:  http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2008/08/10/books/review/heller.html

I have also seen some book cover that deserve honorable mention. So here are a few I liked over the years.

A Million Little Pieces by James Frey

Secret Lives of Great Artist by Elizabeth Lunday

Against Happiness by Eric G. Wilson

Hotheads by Steven Pinker

The Craftsman by Richard Sennett

The Yiddish Policeman’s Union by Michael Chabon

Oil by Matthew Yeomans

Things I’ve Learned From Women Who’ve Dumped Me edited by Ben Karlin

The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

What I learned: Much respect to book designers.

We had so much positive feedback, handed out a lot of our beautiful new literature! We were very excited on so many levels and knowing that we have an awesome website to back up all of our hard work is such a great peace of mind. I have been apologizing for our outdated website far too long and now I don’t have to do that anymore, thank God! And thank you and your team!
