The Exquisite Book

The Exquisite Book is a project based on the Surrealist game called the Exquisite Corpse. The book is a modified version of the game, played by one hundred contributing contemporary fine artists, illustrators, designers and comic artists.

There are be ten groups of ten artists who participated in the process. Each artist contributed one page to the book. The first artist was given a few words to inspire their drawing. Each of the following artists only saw the page that immediately preceded their own. Each artist used images (and optionally, words) to create the continuation to the story, and the inspiration for the next artist in line.

Besides continuing the story of the last artist, there is another, more visual, connection between the pages. Each artist had a horizon line in their image that starts on the left side of the page and ends on the right. Where the horizon line of the first artist’s page ends, is where it begins for the next artist.

Each artist was given two weeks to complete their page. The process took approximately five months. The book was designed by Also and published by Chronicle Books in Sept 2010.”

Remember when they were deciding whether or not to get rid of the penny? Well, it never left and now its giving the naysayers a double slap in the face by showing off its new look. Its like, “Pla-plam!!! What now losers!? I’m here in your face with a new look! Try getting rid of me? I think not!”

Now for boring info: The current Lincoln cent’s reverse (tails side) design is emblematic of President Abraham Lincoln’s preservation of the United States as a single and united country, as required by Title III of Public Law 109-145, the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005.  While the obverse (heads) continues to bear the familiar Victor David Brenner likeness of President Lincoln that has appeared on the coin since 1909, the reverse features a union shield with a scroll draped across and the inscription ONE CENT. read more

The cliché’  “A Picture’s Worth a 1000 Words”  appears to be appropriate.  This candid shot was captured as National Semiconductor launched its latest effort promoting environmentally friendly practices.  They will track the effort as employees commit to switching from plastic and paper to ceramic.

Don’t know how she does it! Artist Diem Chau has some serious artistic ability and steady hands to make these tiny carvings out of crayons.

“I was commissioned by Wieden + Kennedy to carve 66 crayons for this year’s Nike World Cup press kits!  Only 11 kits went out… I have no idea who got them, but I’m so jealous!  W+K is amazing to work with and the project was a welcomed challenge!  I had 18 days to make around 70 crayons, there was a week I slept 3 hours a night.”

I hope she got a set of her own to keep on hand. If not I think Wieden + Kennedy should send one right away.

Diem also does other art besides carving out tiny people in crayons. Check out her blog and her website.

SLEEPBOX

Since the warehouse shelves are full, we’re running out of places to curl up and nap around here. I think I’m gonna suggest installing a couple of these bad boys…how sweet would THAT be??
